Airachnid

Airachnid is Transformers: Prime's sadist, and the show is unusually direct about it. She is introduced in "Predatory" not as a soldier but as a hunter: she collects the severed heads of the last members of species she has driven to extinction, and she has come to Earth for humans. Gina Torres voices her with a purring, unhurried amusement that makes the threat register as personal rather than military.

Her function in the series is to give Arcee a past. Airachnid tortured and killed Arcee's partner Tailgate on Cybertron, shown in flashback in her debut, and every subsequent encounter between them is a grudge match rather than an engagement. She extends the same treatment to Jack Darby and his mother June, kidnapping June in "Crisscross" specifically to draw the two of them out. She is one of the very few Transformers antagonists whose interest in humans is predatory rather than incidental.

She is also a serial defector. She joins the Decepticons when it suits her, is targeted for execution as a traitor in "Crossfire", kills Breakdown while escaping, and then discovers she can control Insecticons directly, giving her an army. From that point she is a third faction. Her attempt to overthrow Megatron with the Insecticons in "Armada" comes closer than most.

Her ending is grotesque and deliberately so. In "Thirst" she is infected by the Terrorcon plague Knock Out's Synthetic Energon experiments have unleashed, kills the human-Decepticon hybrid C.Y.L.A.S., and mounts a final mutiny; Soundwave space-bridges her to one of Cybertron's moons. The last shot of her is a Terrorcon devouring her own Insecticon servants, marooned.

Helicopter alt mode with flight; spider-derived robot mode with four extra limbs, wall-crawling, webbing, a paralysing venom and a drilling attack. She can generate and control Insecticon hives through a form of pheromone or signal dominance, giving her an army independent of the Decepticons. She is also a torturer of some skill. Limits: physically beatable by Arcee and Optimus, and her total untrustworthiness means every alliance she forms is short and ends with someone trying to kill her.

• Arcee: the defining enmity of both characters, founded on Airachnid's torture and murder of Tailgate.
• Jack and June Darby: she pursues them as prey rather than as leverage, which is what makes her unlike any other Decepticon.
• Megatron: an alliance of convenience that ends with a standing execution order and an attempted coup.
• Breakdown: sent to kill her, killed by her instead, in the incident that turns her fully independent.

The IDW Prime tie-in material keeps her consistent with the show. Beast Wars' Blackarachnia and Transformers: Animated's Blackarachnia are distinct characters despite the shared spider theme, and Transformers One's Airachnid is unrelated.

Infected by the Terrorcon plague in "Thirst" and space-bridged by Soundwave to one of Cybertron's moons, where she is last seen devouring her own Insecticon servants. She does not appear in Predacons Rising.

• Voiced by Gina Torres, best known for Firefly and Suits, part of Prime's unusually high-profile live-action casting alongside Peter Cullen, Frank Welker and Tony Todd.
• The name is a respelling of Beast Wars' Blackarachnia lineage but the character is unrelated; Prime deliberately avoided reusing Blackarachnia to keep the two distinct.
• Her helicopter alt mode makes her one of few Decepticons in the series without a jet mode, and it was chosen to give her a hovering, stalking movement style.
• Prime is unusual in giving its principal female antagonist a predator-and-trophy motivation rather than a romantic or subordinate one, and it drew comment at the time for how dark that was for a Hub Network show.
• A separate character named Airachnid appears in the 2024 film Transformers One with no connection to the Prime version beyond the name.

Where the cartoon, the Marvel comics and the toy bios disagree, or where a popular claim does not hold up. We record these rather than smoothing them over.

• Her ultimate fate is deliberately unresolved: the show leaves open whether she starves on the moon or eventually escapes, and no later material settles it.
