Perceptor

Perceptor is the Autobots' resident scientist, and the joke of the character is that he cannot stop sounding like one. His tech spec motto is "One's ultimate truth lies in one's molecular structure," his specialities are metallurgy, molecular chemistry and electrical engineering, and his stated main role is studying how the Autobots can best adapt to Earth. Paul Eiding voiced him with a precise, faintly professorial delivery, and the writers gave him dialogue dense enough that other characters visibly stop following. The habit is not arrogance; the likeliest reading is that he simply does not register that his vocabulary is not universal.

He is not a warrior by preference, but he is not timid either. In "Microbots" he shrinks himself to microscopic scale, along with Bumblebee and Brawn, to enter Megatron's body and sever the Heart of Cybertron powering him, a rescue that turns entirely on Perceptor's science rather than firepower. In "Cosmic Rust" he synthesises the cure for the corrosive plague eating through the Autobots. In "The God Gambit" he travels with Jazz to Titan to recover Cosmos, and in "Child's Play" and "The Golden Lagoon" he is repeatedly the Autobot whose analysis makes the situation legible.

He does fight when it is required. In "Carnage in C Minor" he blasts Devastator apart into his components using the cannon hidden in his microscope barrel. His intelligence and skill are both rated 10, the top of the scale, while his speed is a 2, and the tech spec's stated weakness is blunt: absent minded, and his lenses are his weakest part. After the 1986 movie he becomes one of the constants of season three, and by "The Face of the Nijika" he has his universal emulator removed and his consciousness transferred into an alien construct, which he takes with characteristic equanimity.

Perceptor transforms into a functioning microscope capable of powerful magnification, and his lens barrel converts into a hidden light cannon, which he uses in "Carnage in C Minor" to blow Devastator apart into his component Constructicons. In robot mode he carries a concussion rifle and a shoulder rocket launcher. His scientific capabilities are the real weapon: he can miniaturise himself and others to microscopic scale ("Microbots") and synthesise cures for engineered plagues ("Cosmic Rust"). The tech spec rates his intelligence and skill at the maximum 10 but his speed at 2, making him the slowest of the 1985 Autobots on the card, and it names two explicit weaknesses: he is absent minded, and his lenses are his most fragile component. He also states outright that combat is not his preferred activity.

• Wheeljack, the Autobots' other inventor and his natural counterpart, with whom he is repeatedly paired on technical work; Wheeljack's death at Autobot City leaves Perceptor as the ranking Autobot scientist.
• Optimus Prime, who per the tech spec relies on Perceptor's judgement and treats him as the equal of any of his officers.
• Rodimus Prime, whom he accompanies on most of the season three missions and openly advises against poor decisions.
• Blaster, with whom he shares command of an Autobot resistance cell on Cybertron in the Marvel and Dreamwave versions of the backstory.

Marvel gives Perceptor a command role rather than a lab: he leads the Autobot resistance cell on Cybertron that Blaster belongs to, and crosses to Earth via the Space Bridge, with far less emphasis on inventions and cures. IDW later took the divergence much further, rebuilding him after near-fatal injuries into a Wrecker sniper.

Perceptor survives the battle of Autobot City in the 1986 movie, where Wheeljack does not, and becomes a season three regular, appearing through "The Rebirth." In Marvel continuity he is deactivated during the Underbase conflict and later restored.

• The toy started life as Takara's Microchange MC-20 Micro Scope, a genuinely functional microscope; the Transformers release retains a third "tank" or mobile-laboratory mode left over from that origin.
• Magnification is limited to roughly 14x by the crudeness of the lens, which is why the toy is a working microscope in the loosest sense.
• Shinji Aramaki, then designing for Takara, took the initial inspiration from the microscope-like heads of the mecha in Armored Trooper Votoms and applied it literally; his involvement ended at the concept stage.
• The mould was repainted in 2005 as the Decepticon Magnificus.
• In his own 1985 toy commercial Perceptor is animated as genuinely microscope-sized next to Optimus Prime and stays that small in robot mode, contradicting his cartoon scale.
• An Action Master Perceptor was designed but never produced; the concept art gives him two shoulder-mounted microscope cannons rather than one.

Where the cartoon, the Marvel comics and the toy bios disagree, or where a popular claim does not hold up. We record these rather than smoothing them over.

• Cartoon Perceptor is a non-combatant specialist while Marvel treats him as an Autobot faction commander; the tech spec sits between the two, calling combat not his preference while rating his courage at 8 and firepower at 8.
• His scale is inconsistent: the original toy commercial shows him as a hand-sized microscope, while the cartoon draws him at standard Autobot car size.
• His arrival on Earth is never established in the cartoon. "Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1" implies he was aboard the Ark all along, but his first appearance is the later "Dinobot Island, Part 2."
