Sentinel Prime

Sentinel Prime, in Dark of the Moon (2011), is the film series' one genuinely effective twist. He is Optimus Prime's predecessor as Autobot leader and his mentor, the commander of the Ark, which fled Cybertron carrying hundreds of space-bridge pillars and crashed on the far side of the Moon in 1961. The Apollo programme, in the film's telling, existed to reach him. Leonard Nimoy voices him, and the casting does enormous work: the voice arrives carrying forty years of accumulated authority.

Revived by the Matrix of Leadership, he is presented for most of an hour as the Autobots' salvation and the film's moral heavyweight. Then he turns. Sentinel made a deal with Megatron before the crash: the pillars will be used to transport Cybertron into Earth's orbit and rebuild it using human beings as slave labour. His justification is not madness but calculation. Cybertron's survival is worth any price, and Optimus's refusal to make that trade is, in his view, sentiment.

He murders Ironhide with a cosmic rust cannon in cold blood, one of the coldest moments in the series, and delivers the line that defines him: he was never Optimus's enemy, and that is precisely why he wins for as long as he does. Optimus, who is a better fighter, spends the last act being beaten by his own teacher.

Sentinel is killed at the film's climax, executed by Optimus after Megatron turns on him and Optimus refuses his plea. The film gives him no redemption, which is the right call. He is a Prime who decided the ends justified the extinction of a species.

Rosenbauer Panther fire truck alt mode. Armed with a retractable shield, a large blade, and a cosmic rust cannon capable of disintegrating a Transformer in seconds. He is depicted as physically superior to Optimus Prime in direct combat, defeating him repeatedly in the film's final act. His most dangerous asset is the space-bridge pillar network he controls. Limits: he is old, he depends on Megatron for the plan's execution, and he is destroyed the moment his ally turns on him.

• Optimus Prime: his student and successor, whose faith in him he exploits completely and who ultimately executes him.
• Megatron: a co-conspirator he treats as a junior partner, and who turns on him in the final act.
• Ironhide: murdered by him with a cosmic rust cannon in the film's most shocking moment.
• The Autobots: an entire faction that regards him as a legend, which is precisely what makes the betrayal function.

The name has been used repeatedly across continuities with no shared characterisation. Transformers: Animated's Sentinel Prime is a pompous comic foil. IDW's Sentinel Prime is a corrupt authoritarian leader, closer in spirit to the film version but developed very differently. The Transformers One (2024) Sentinel Prime is a separate character again.

Killed at the end of Dark of the Moon. Wounded by Megatron, he begs Optimus for mercy; Optimus refuses and executes him with Megatron's own weapon.

• Voiced by Leonard Nimoy, who had previously voiced Galvatron in The Transformers: The Movie (1986); Dark of the Moon includes a deliberate line lifted from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which Nimoy also starred in.
• Michael Bay initially cast Nimoy at the suggestion of his wife, and Nimoy had been reluctant to return to voice work; Dark of the Moon was among his last major roles.
• The film retcons the Apollo 11 mission as a covert operation to reach the crashed Ark, using archival NASA footage and a Buzz Aldrin cameo playing himself.
• His Rosenbauer Panther fire-truck alt mode is one of the few emergency-vehicle modes in the Bay films and was chosen to evoke G1's Optimus Prime lineage.
• Transformers: Animated had earlier used Sentinel Prime as a comic, pompous rival to Optimus; Dark of the Moon's version shares nothing with it but the name.
