Michael Bay’s The Last Knight was the franchise’s wildest swing: it tied the Transformers to King Arthur and Merlin, turned Optimus Prime into Nemesis Prime, and stretched across the Dark Ages, a Nazi-era wreck and a falling Cybertron. It was Bay’s last, and the lowest-grossing of the live-action run. This is the deepest record of it anywhere: every score, every character, every secret, and the long road that got it to the screen.
// THE VERDICT
Reviews were among the harshest in the series: a 16 percent Tomatometer and a 27 on Metacritic, with critics attacking the incoherent, overstuffed plot and the exhausting 154-minute runtime. Audiences were warmer than the critics, and CinemaScore graded it a B-plus on opening night, but the gap could not save it.
For the first time, the messy hyperactive form and nihilistic crunched-metal content seem to reinforce each other.
The fifth Transformers movie, The Last Knight, is far from the worst in this continuing experiment in noisy nonsense based on Hasbro toys. That is thanks largely to two words: Anthony Hopkins.
Monster metal, mass destruction, Anthony Hopkins saying dude. This is your brain on Michael Bay, a cortex scramble so amped on pyro and noise and brawling cyborgs it can only process what is happening on screen in onomatopoeia.
If you are not staggered by the technique on display here, the stuff that sets Bay above the Fast and Furiouses and X-Men Apocalypses of this world, you are not paying attention.
It is an unabashed freewheeling mess of CGI explosions, fast-talking strategies and shiny metal monstrosities clashing in epic battles. And it is actually kind of fun, in an infuriating sort of way.
Clangorous and nonsensical, the fifth installment of the toys-to-world-saviors franchise still has a spark of grandeur that could only come from one director.
One of Michael Bay’s most underrated over-stimulations. This is the gleeful byproduct of a filmmaker freed from franchise servitude, a five-alarm fire sale of every cockamamie Transformers concept Bay had yet to explore.
Michael Bay has promised that this is the last Transformers movie he will direct, which is no small relief. It will not, alas, be the last Transformers movie.

On a reported budget near 217 million dollars, The Last Knight opened to about 44.7 million over its domestic debut, the weakest of any Bay Transformers film, and finished near 605.4 million worldwide, roughly 130 million at home and 475 million abroad. Even strong Chinese numbers could not lift it back to the series peaks near 1.1 billion. That makes it by far the lowest-grossing entry of the live-action run and, after marketing, a title that reportedly lost money theatrically.

The film reveals a hidden history: Transformers have been on Earth for over a millennium, woven through the legend of King Arthur, where the wizard Merlin won a Cybertronian staff that is now the key to the planet’s fate. A clandestine order, the Witwiccans, has guarded the secret across the centuries.
In the present, Transformers are outlawed and hunted, Optimus Prime has vanished into space to confront his maker, and inventor Cade Yeager shelters the survivors. When Optimus returns brainwashed into Quintessa’s servant Nemesis Prime, the hunt for Merlin’s staff becomes a race to stop Cybertron itself from draining Earth’s life. An English lord, an Oxford professor descended from Merlin, and Cade run a conspiracy from Arthurian Britain to a climactic collision of two worlds.
The film’s wild swing was fusing the Transformers with Arthurian myth: a Dark Ages battle, a drunken Merlin, and a dragon-shaped combiner, committing fully to the idea that the robots had always been part of human legend.
Built by a writers’ room to launch a shared universe, it crams in knights, staffs, ancient orders, a brainwashed Optimus and a falling Cybertron, the most lore-dense and tonally unhinged entry in the series.
Michael Bay’s fifth and final film, and the point where the bigger-louder-more strategy hit its commercial ceiling. Its stumble forced Paramount to shelve the universe plan and reset with Bumblebee.
It was built to launch a universe and instead collapsed one, the maximalist Bay finale whose failure cleared the way for the back-to-basics reinvention that followed.

Cold open, ILM
In the present, Transformers are outlawed and hunted by the government TRF. Optimus Prime is gone, having left Earth to find his creator, and inventor Cade Yeager shelters the surviving Autobots in a Badlands junkyard.
The new status quo
A dying Transformer passes Cade an ancient talisman that fuses to his arm, marking him as the human chosen to carry the legacy of the Knights. It draws him, and Bumblebee, into the hidden history.
The chosen human
Optimus reaches a ruined Cybertron and meets Quintessa, who claims to be his maker and brainwashes him into Nemesis Prime, ordering him to bring Merlin staff home and drain Earth to heal their world.
The heel turn
Anthony Hopkins Sir Edmund Burton, last of the Witwiccans, recruits Cade and Oxford professor Vivian Wembley, revealing that she is the last descendant of Merlin and the only one who can wield the staff.
The lore dump
The hunt for Merlin staff runs through a sunken wartime wreck and a globe-trotting chase, as Megatron cuts a deal with the humans and the two Optimuses are set on a collision course.
Second act
Quintessa pulls a horned, dying Cybertron down onto Earth to drain its life. The Autobots, humans and TRF converge for a chaotic aerial and ground battle around the descending world.
Third act, ILM
In the climax Bumblebee long-silent voice returns, and the sound of it shocks Optimus free of Quintessa control. United again, the Autobots and Vivian pull the staff and stop Cybertron from consuming the Earth.

The opening dragon is a combiner formed from the twelve Knights of Iacon, a medieval-flavoured design that fuses Cybertronian metal with heraldic, dragon-like organic forms to sell the Arthurian conceit.
The film best-liked invention, the psychotic butler Cogman, needed a rig expressive enough to carry Jim Carter clipped comic timing, a rare case of the VFX serving character over pure scale.

Steve Jablonsky returned for his fifth and final Transformers score, reprising themes he had built across the Bay run while pushing them to their largest scale yet. Because so much of his music was cut up in the edit, he released an unusually long album, 34 tracks over more than two hours, restoring much of the original, unedited score.

The marketing pivoted hard to medieval myth, a dragon-like Transformer, a sword-in-the-stone conceit and Anthony Hopkins gravitas, selling the wild Arthurian swing as the hook that set this entry apart from the four before it.
Trailers and press leaned on this being Michael Bay final Transformers film as director, framing it as the grand, everything-at-once send-off to a decade-long run that began in 2007.
The campaign hinted at the writers-room shared universe behind the film, positioning The Last Knight as the keystone that would unlock spin-offs and sequels, a promise the box office would soon undo.
The single most-used image was Optimus, corrupted into Nemesis Prime, squaring off against Bumblebee, staged to sell a hero-versus-hero showdown at the heart of the film.

A brief mid-credits tag reveals that Quintessa, seemingly killed in the finale, has survived and is hiding on Earth in human guise, approaching a scientist about the strange horns now rising from the planet surface.
The horns, she explains, confirm that Earth itself is the dormant body of Unicron, the ancient enemy of Cybertron. It is a setup for a sequel that, after the film commercial stumble, never arrived.
